About Berat

Berat is one of the oldest cities in Albania and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Known as the „city of one window after another,” the sight of the Ottoman houses of the Mangalem neighborhood, stacked one on top of the other on the hillside, is one of the most recognizable images of the country.

The Berat Castle, overlooking the city, is still inhabited today. Within its walls are a Byzantine church and the Onufri Iconographic Museum, with works by the most famous Albanian icon painter. Below the castle, the Gorica Bridge connects the two historic neighborhoods over the Osumi River.
