Tirana and the snowy Dajti Mountain, the guesthouses of Lura, Theth and Valbona, food preserved from the summer, red wine and wood-burning stoves. Five reasons for a January away from the internet, and how a private minibus with a driver makes the trip easier.
After the noise of the holidays, January is the month of calm. Tirana returns to its rhythm, Dajti Mountain above the city turns white with snow, and in the mountainous areas of Lura, Theth and Valbona, life slows down around the wood-burning stove.
This is not a trip to see as many places as possible. It's a trip to stop: a little internet, a lot of nature, conversations around the fire and the guesthouse table with food preserved from the summer. Here are five reasons to try it in January, two sample itineraries and some practical advice.
The capital as a base and the mountain above it, whitened by snow.
Snowy mountain villages, warm rooms and family hospitality.
No notifications and no screen: peace, nature and good sleep.
Pickles, jam, trahana, dried meat and barrel-aged cheese.
Long evenings with red wine, brandy and a wood fire.
Tirana is the travel base: the airport, hotels, cafes and museums are open all year round, and after the holidays the city has a more relaxed pace. Above it, Dajti Mountain is the closest national park to the capital. January is usually the coldest month of the year, and the upper part of the mountain is often covered in snow.
For many groups, a day in Dajt is the quickest way to see snow without leaving Tirana: walks in the forest and on the plateau, views over the entire city, and lunch by the wood stove. Here's what not to miss:
Walking in the snow among the pine trees, with views over all of Tirana.
Climbing over forests and rocks, when the weather permits.
Roasted meat, mountain dishes and mountain tea in Dajti's restaurants.
The cafes and restaurants of the center, after a day in the snow.
Our minibuses have winter tires and chains, so we can take you to Dajt even when the road is snowy. We pick you up at your hotel in Tirana, wait for you during the day, and return you in the evening.
In January, Albania's mountainous regions are quiet and white. Family-run guesthouses, stone and wooden houses, offer simple, warm rooms, home-cooked meals and the renowned hospitality of the highlanders. Many guesthouses close in winter, so those that remain open should be booked early.
Lura National Park, in Dibër, with glacial lakes and pine forests, which are covered with snow in winter.
The village in the heart of the Albanian Alps, with the stone church, the Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit) and the Theth River.
The Valbona Valley in the national park, surrounded by the peaks of the Alps, silent and white in winter.
We take you by minibus to the village. In some segments, when the road is snowy, we continue with 4×4. The vehicles have winter tires and chains, and when the snow closes the road, we postpone or change the itinerary.
In many mountain villages, the phone signal is weak, and that's what makes these days special. Without notifications, without emails, and without news, the day is measured by the sunlight: breakfast with warm bread, a walk in the snow, a long lunch, and an evening around the stove.
The tranquility of the mountain, the fresh air and the sound sleep are the easiest way to recover energy after a busy year. Many guesthouses have Wi-Fi, but you choose to leave your phone in your bag.
Without notifications and without a screen, group conversations take their place again.
Quiet trails among pine trees and villages, at your own pace.
A book, a card game or just conversation, by the crackling fire.
No traffic noise and no city lights, just the silence of the night.
You only think about your vacation. The driver monitors the weather and road conditions, picks you up at your hotel or airport, and drops you off when you're done.
In mountainous areas, winter preparations begin in the summer. Families fill jars with pickles, make jam and jelly, dry meat, beans and peppers, make trahana (a dried mix of flour and yogurt), and store cheese in a cask. In January, when the snow closes the roads, these reserves are brought out to the table and make every lunch a celebration.
In the guesthouses you will try warm and hearty dishes, made with home-grown products and often cooked on a wood-burning stove.
Cabbage, peppers, green tomatoes and carrots in jars, prepared in the fall.
Summer and autumn fruits, preserved for winter mornings.
Trahana made with flour and yogurt, and kaçamak with corn flour, butter and cheese.
Meat dried in the summer and sarma with sauerkraut, classic winter dishes in the north.
Cheese preserved in a wooden cask and mountain honey, on every guesthouse table.
After a long lunch at the guesthouse, no one has to drive. The driver will pick you up and take you to the next stop.
January evenings in the mountains are long, but it's warm inside. The wood-burning stove is the heart of the home: it's where cooking is done, water is heated, and the whole group gathers. A glass of house red wine or a shot of brandy accompanies the conversations until late.
On the way to Theth, you pass by the Shkodra and Zadrima areas, where Kallmeti, the local red wine grape of the north, is cultivated. A bottle of Kallmet is a good gift to take to the guesthouse or to bring home.
After an evening of wine and raki, you don't need to drive. The next day, the driver will be ready and waiting for you, with a warm vehicle.
January is for those seeking peace and quiet. With a private minibus, the whole group travels together, warm and without worrying about the snowy road.
A weekend in the snow, away from the phone, with long dinners and conversations around the stove.
Kids in the snow, parents by the fire, and the whole family together in a warm vehicle.
A mountain retreat to start the year: tranquility, nature, and time for the team.
Groups who want to get to know the mountainous Albania, with a driver waiting for them at the airport at any hour.
Tirana, the snowy Dajti Mountain and a night at a guesthouse in Theth.
We pick you up at the airport or hotel. Afternoon in Dajt for the snow and the view over the city, dinner in Tirana.
The road north, through Shkodra. The last part, when there is snow, we do it by 4×4. Dinner at the guesthouse by the wood stove.
Snow walk in the village and lunch with the guesthouse's food, then return to Tirana or directly to the airport.
If heavy snow closes the road, we postpone the trip or adjust the itinerary.
For groups that want to really disconnect: two guesthouses, lots of snow, and little internet.
Arrival in Rinas. Afternoon in Dajt for the snow and the view over the city, dinner in Tirana.
Road to Dibra and Lura National Park. Evening at the guesthouse.

Full day away from the internet: walks in the valley, fli and mountain dishes, wood fire.
Return to Tirana or directly to Tirana Airport.
Thethi and Valbona are in two different valleys. In winter, the mountain path between them is impassable, so we divide them into separate itineraries.
In January, mountain roads require a prepared vehicle and a professional driver. You think about the vacation, we think about the road.
The minibus takes you to the village; in the snowy segments we continue with a 4×4.
